Community Engagement

Outreach and Social Justice

Outreach

At Sylvania United Church of Christ, we are called to serve compassionately and to do justice. In a typical year, the Outreach Board provides numerous opportunities for us to serve and give, both within our community and beyond.

Some past in-person service opportunities have included: making pb&j sandwiches with Food for Thought, hosting a Meal Packing Event in partnership with Impact with Hope and Christ Presbyterian, and helping Sylvania Area Family Services prepare their garden bed for planting and providing personal care products to those in need from their facility. The Outreach Board aims to provide frequent opportunities for living out our faith by serving others.

Some monetary giving opportunities have included: donating towards Blanket Sunday for Church World Service; special UCC offerings collected throughout the year; Feed Your Neighbor food and noisy offering collections; Operation PJ collection through Toledo Seagate Foodbank; and the Giving Tree at Christmas. The Outreach Board aims to provide frequent opportunities for living out our faith by giving to others.

A mission trip, sponsored by the Outreach Board, is held most years. Persons of all ages are encouraged to attend. In the past we’ve traveled to Templed Hills Church Camp, Pilgrim Hills Church Camp, and Back Bay Mission.

Mission Partners

Through our Outreach Giving, each of the following organizations receive a percentage of our tithes and offerings: Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM), CUE (Chicago, United, and Eden Theological Seminaries), Feed Your Neighbor, Toledo Campus Ministry, Grace Community Center, St. Paul’s Community Center, Sylvania Area Family Services, and Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity.

Social Justice

The Social Justice Group of the church meets the second Sunday of the month in the Chapel and on Zoom. Current emphases include immigrant and refugee support, environmental stewardship, LGBTQ+ support, voting rights advocacy, and racial justice. The group has compiled a reading list for those who are interested in learning more.

The United Church of Christ also provides regular opportunities to “take action” on social justice issues through advocacy. Click here to sign-up for email alerts.

Partners

We are pleased to provide meeting space for groups engaged in serving others, such as Al-Anon and Alzheimer’s support groups.
